Welcome to the virtual home of The Just Community. The Just Community refers to the philosophy and practice of democracy at Shalhevet. When Dr. Friedman first started Shalhevet in 1996. he wanted to develop an inclusive learning community that encouraged students to think morally, ethically, and democratically. More than that, he wanted students to participate–together with the faculty–in an ongoing discussion about Justice and Fairness. In The Just Community, students have rights and responsibilities that are enshrined in the school constitution. In The Just Community, all community members must learn how to work together, and balance the competing needs of students, teachers, and the faculty at large. But you don't need to hear it from us, just listen to our students:
